EXOTIC MARRAKECH

By Fabrizio Nolo, celebrity butcher

Ifirst came to Marrakech in the late spring. The city’s rarefied mix of past and present, European and eastern, enfolded me like an embrace. Its colours, the flavours, the enticing sounds of the drums, the throng of people, the crowded markets and even the street vendors all make you forget the frenetic pace of great western cities.

Marrakech’s citizens are known for their hospitality, and have always been masters of tolerance and openness to the widest possible variety of cultures. My first sight of Koutubia, the mosque that dominates the city, was a magical experience. The pastel pink Bahia palace, a popular backdrop with film directors, is another unforgettable sight, while the exquisite Menara gardens are simply astounding.

However, what struck me most was the city’s rich gastronomic tradition and the attention locals pay to physical wellbeing. The sheer skill of Marrakech’s cooks, in mixing Berber spices with new western culinary trends, makes eating here an extraordinary experience. Traditional dishes and modern creations alike can be sampled at Le Tanjia, Le Marrakchi, Villa Rosa, Bo & Zin, Le Comptoir and Crystal. Meanwhile, the Café de la Poste, Leroy’s Kfé and Soukara should not be missed if you want to try the traditional mint tea — a truly essential ritual.

If you want to be completely pampered, don’t forget the age-old ritual of the hamam, the steam bath that purifies you in body and mind. Meanwhile, lovers of nightlife should head out to the Plage Rouge or Nikki Beach.
