MY BUSINESS TREND

Art and Commerce

Want to invigorate your business? Try a little art. This year’s hot retail trend is to combine retail spaces with galleries

- Louis Vuitton has shown real initiative in using art to drive commerce. Even before Paris’s Sunday trading laws were relaxed last autumn, the luxury firm had special permission to open its flagship Champs-Elysées store seven days a week because of a “fashion museum” on the second floor. Its profits increased by 8% in 2007. www.louisvuitton.com

- Boasting a century-long tradition of excellence, the Baldissera Arte gallery is an antique and picture restoration business located in the heart of Rome. Over the last 10 years, owners Gustavo and Anny Baldissera have diversified, moving to a large space where they host exhibitions for contemporary painters from around the world. The gallery, built on the remains of an ancient villa, is a work of art in itself. Their profits have increased by 30%. www.cassiopeaitalia.org

- Hermàs sponsored a Europe-wide show featuring eight young video artists, and last year the firm’s profits increased by 7.3%. The Paris fashion house also shows video art on its website. See the virtual gallery, Encounters, at www.hermes.com.
