The Athénée Palace, the spies’ favourite hotel

The Athénée Palace Hotel in Bucharest in 1940
“Here was the heart of Bucharest, intellectually, politically – and, if you like, morally,” wrote Newsweek writer RG Waldeck in her memoir, which was set at the Athénée Palace during a stay from June 1940 to January 1941.
The Athénée Palace was, perhaps, the first hotel to have an electronic bug in every room. A den of spies during Bucharest’s pre-war heyday, the Athénée fell into the hands of the Soviet secret service in 1947. Now part of the Hilton chain, it has lost its hidden microphones, yet retained its luxury fittings.
